On the occasion of the Canova celebrations held to commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the death of Antonio Canova (1822-2022), Villa Carlotta presented an exhibition dedicated to the comparison between the artistic poetics of Antonio Canova and that of Phidias of Athens, his “alter ego” from antiquity. The catalogue, “Canova, novello Fidia,” presents and explores, through text and images, the dialogue established between the Canova works exhibited at Villa Carlotta and the Roman-era replicas of Greek sculptures attributed to Phidias, as well as with documentary materials from major Italian museums. The catalogue features texts by Gianfranco Adornato, Elena Lissoni, and Maria Angela Previtera, along with notes on works by Alberto Corvi, Eva Falaschi, and Elena Lissoni, providing insight into the themes and comparisons presented by the exhibition. The exhibition is divided into four sections: “The Myth of Phidias in Eighteenth-Century Rome,” “The Antiquities of Athens,” “The Thunderbolt, the Scepter, the Spear,” “Divine Beauty,” “Neoclassical Phidias,” and “Thorvaldsen, Phidias of the North.”
