Among the most splendid and distinctive of Italian gardens, the Boboli Gardens is an exceptionally evocative complex thanks to a combination of factors: from the lush vegetation to the panoramic hilltop location to the magnificence of the sculptural decoration. Begun in the mid-16th century by order of Eleonora of Toledo, the garden was gradually enriched by the works of several generations of artists until the 17th century. This volume, which includes contributions from a large team of scholars coordinated by Litta Maria Medri, director of the Boboli Gardens, offers a comprehensive overview of the Florentine complex, both through the narrative of its historical events and through the analysis of the many artistic, architectural, and botanical aspects that are of great interest today and that made it, in the past, a privileged place of representation for the governors who managed it.
