For the first time, the Peter Goop Collection, the most important privately owned collection of printed herbals, is presented in a book. In these pages, the reader will be able to admire a series of specimens that have shaped the history of herbals and science: from the splendid 1476 edition of Storia naturale by Plinio il Vecchio to the stunning watercolor volume of Hortus Eystettensis by Basilius Besler from 1613, as well as the collection’s highlight, the Kräuterbücher—the “books of simples” printed between 1470 and 1500. This already prestigious exhibition is complemented by a selection of precious botanical volumes belonging to the Library of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei e Corsiniana in Rome, the oldest scientific academy in the world.
