Description

Dedicated to the celebrated marble frieze Triumphal Entry of Alexander the Great into Babylon, created by Bertel Thorvaldsen for the collector and patron Giovanni Battista Sommariva, this volume represents the latest in a series of initiatives undertaken since 2016 to advance knowledge and study of the Villa Carlotta collections. The research, promoted by the Villa Carlotta Foundation, in collaboration with the La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Center and with the support of the Cariplo Foundation, sheds light on the context and events that brought one of the most moving masterpieces by the Danish sculptor and European Neoclassicism to the museum’s collections. The volume explores the complex history of this work through previously unpublished documents, in-depth studies, and a rich iconographic apparatus that presents the frieze both in its entirety and in particular, focusing on striking details.
